How often should you wash your locs?

One of the most common questions I get is:

How often should you wash your locs?

My recommendation: no less than once a month.

Personally, I wash my locs twice a month, and I recommend that frequency for many people especially if you regularly apply oils or other topical products. Product buildup prevents moisture from penetrating your locs.

Here’s why washing your locs more often can help:

  1. It keeps your scalp clean- Sweat, natural oils, and products accumulate on the scalp. Regular washing helps prevent buildup.
  2. It helps with moisture- Many people who struggle with dry locs simply aren’t washing often enough. Water is the foundation of moisture.
  3. It improves hygiene- Your scalp is skin. Keeping it clean supports a healthier scalp environment overall.

After washing, it’s a great time to nourish your scalp and locs with a hot oil treatment to help with moisture retention if you're dealing with excess dryness.

I recommend using the Horsetail Leaf Growth Oil because horsetail is naturally rich in silica, which supports stronger hair.

My Recommended Hot Oil Treatment Method

Apply Horsetail Leaf Growth Oil to your scalp and along your locs after your locs have been freshly washed and squeezed out. Massage your scalp for several minutes and lightly coat entires locs with HLGO. Cover with a plastic cap or wrap with a warm towel. Leave on 20–30 minutes before continuing with your maintenance (retwisting, styling, or simplying drying your locs). Don't rinse.
